Chicago Park District

In Chicago, the parks are alive and bursting with fun! Culture, sports, education...and a whole lot of fun with neighbors, families and friends...bring millions of people into Chicago's parks. Programming is provided in five areas: Cultural Enrichment, Health & Physical Activities, Social Enhancement, Personal Development & Life Skills and Outdoor & Environmental Education. Classes and programs serve a variety of different age groups. From toddlers to seniors, there truly is something for everyone in Chicago parks!

Use the Park District site to explore some of Chicago's most beautiful and entertaining resources - your Chicago parks. Come out and play!

The Lakefront Trail
Chicago has one of the most beautiful and accessible shorelines of any city in the world, including 15 miles of bathing beaches and 18 miles of bike paths. In 1909, Daniel Burnham and his assistant, Edward Bennett, created the Plan for Chicago which specified that the shoreline remain publicly owned, non-commercial, and be developed as parks, beaches and recreational space to be enjoyed by all. The best place to walk, jog, rollerblade or bike is along the Lakefront Trail which offers miles of beautiful paved pathway.

City of Chicago Bicycle Page
This site includes maps of all the bike routes in Chicago and a detailed map of what you see along the popular lake front bike trail.

Smelt Fishing
This is a traditional event that many Chicagoans greet with enthusiasm every year. In spring, tiny, finger-sized smelt (relatives of salmon and trout) head to the lakeshore to spawn. There is not much skill needed to catch the critters in nets, and the atmosphere is more party-like than a serious fishing expedition. The party begins in the pre-dawn hours of 2-3 a.m., and one of the best spots to try it or observe it is the stretch of lakeshore just south of Navy Pier although fisherman's lanterns can be spotted along most of the shoreline.

Chicago Area Paddling and Fishing Page
This free, non commercial website covers boating and fishing in Chicagoland where you'll find depth maps of Chicago Park District Lagoons, Chicago River and the Lake Calumet Region information. The site also has maps showing the Chicago River before it was moved north of Belmont (so people can see if their homes are in former river bed), and several 1873 maps showing some of the businesses in the river area.

Golf
Chicagoland Golf Directory

Ice Skating
The Mayor's Office of Special Events presents Skate on State, a free ice skating rink in the heart of downtown Chicago, location on State Street, between Washington and Randolph.

Swimming
Lake Michigan's shore is lined with 31 sandy beaches for sunning and swimming. Life guards are on duty from June to September from 9 a.m. ti 9 p.m.
